Men's Soccer Loses a Tough Battle to Saint Joseph, Conn.

CHICOPEE, Mass. - The Elms College Men's Soccer hosted the University of Saint Joseph, Conn. for a conference matchup on Tuesday evening at Leary Field.

BASICS
Score: Elms College 1 | University of Saint Joseph, Conn. 3
Records: Blazers 6-10-1, 2-7-1 (GNAC) | Blue Jays 9-3-2, 8-0-2 (GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Elms fell behind 2-0 early, as Saint Joseph took advantage of a couple lapses in the Elms defense to score and take an early lead. Elms would see a handful of early shots by first year forward/midfielder Derek Lonczak (Chicopee, Mass.), senior midfielder Pajorn Drysdale (Nantucket, Mass.), and sophomore forward/defender Ibrahim Ayouba (Springfield, Mass.) would record a shot later on in the half to try and chip into the Blue Jays lead, but the Blazers were unable to break through. Sophomore goalkeeper Jack Bousquet (Clinton, Conn.) would save a plethora of shots in the half, but Elms was unable to support him defensively and gave up a third goal before halftime. Senior forward Jacobo Molina Ferrer (Valencia, Spain) would record a shot before halftime, but it was saved by the USJ goalkeeper, and the Blazers went into halftime down 3-0.

Molina Ferrer would be the main Blazer who fired shots on the Blue Jays net during the second half, but to no avail. Elms would see additional shots from first year defender Samuel Webster (Malaga, Spain) and Ayouba during the second half, but the Blazers would struggle to move the ball against the tight USJ defense. Bousquet would continue to make save after save in an attempt to keep the Blazers in range, but without offensive support and the clock against them, Elms failed to take advantage of their limited opportunities. A crucial defensive error by the Blue Jays led to a late penalty kick goal by Molina Ferrer. Without enough time after the score, the Blazers were unable to muster up another two goals, and fell 3-1 to Saint Joseph in conference play.

  • Bousquet would make four saves of the seven shots he faced.
