Blazers Reach New Personal Bests Over GNAC Championship Weekend

Wellesley, MA - The Elms College Blazers compete at the Greater Northeast Athletic Conference Swim and Dive Championships.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
The Elms College Blazers made their first splash Friday morning in the 50-yard butterfly prelims with First Year Joni McGillis (Katy, TX) qualifying for the A final. First Year Miguel Pearce (New Haven, CT) also competed in the 50-yard butterfly and finished in 9th place over all qualifying as the first alternate. Friday night during the finals session McGillis came back with vengeance in the 50-yard Butterfly. She finished sixth place overall improving her position by two places from the preliminary session.
 
During the preliminary session of the second day Senior Captain Ashley Cronkhite (Lewiston, ME) and Junior Manuerida Severino (Chicopee, MA)competed in the 50-yard backstroke. Cronkhite secured the 10th spot for finals and Severino secured the 13th spot. In the 50-yard freestyle Cronkhite placed eleventh in the prelims and Mcgillis placed fourth. Pearce also competed and placed tenth landing him in the second alternate spot for finals.
 
Day two finals Cronkhite placed eleventh in the 50-yard backstroke and Severino placed thirteen. After a quick turn around Cronkhite competed in the 50-yard freestyle finals improving her placement and finishing in the top ten. McGillis finished fifth overall in the 50-yard freestyle and was just out of reach of making it to the podium.
 
The Blazers made waves during day three of prelims with McGillis and Cronkhite competing in the 100-yard freestyle. McGillis improved her season best time by a little over half a second to make it back as the fifth seed in finals. Cronkhite earned a personal best in this event to secure the eleventh seed going into finals. Severino competed in the 100-yard backstroke where she took thirteen seconds off her personal best time and seeded thirteenth for finals.
 
Day three of finals Cronkhite lowered her own personal best time by almost a second while finishing eleventh overall. McGillis lowered her season best time again by a little over a half a second finishing fifth overall. Severino wrapped up the Blazers weekend by competing in the finals of the 100-yard backstroke. While placing thirteen overall Severino lowered her best time by another five seconds.

"We had a great weekend of swims and I am very proud of what we accomplished. Comparing our overall team score to last year we almost quadrupled our score. There is still a long way to go, but the team has grown so much in this season. GO BLAZERS!"
 
UP NEXT:
 
-The Blazers are on the road on Saturday, 2/11 traveling to Standish, ME to compete against Saint Jospeh's College of Maine and Regis College. The Blazers will be making a splash at 2:00 PM.
