Women's Soccer Loses to Regis in Final Minutes

CHICOPEE, Mass. - The Elms College Women's Soccer hosted Regis College for a conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Leary Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The first half would begin with the two conference foes trading possession early. Elms and Regis would both take shots on each other, with Elms adding a shot from junior forward/midfielder Emily Basua (Oxnard, Calif.) and the Blazers defense blocking two shots. Then in the 21st minute, Basua would take a corner kick and find senior forward Jamie McDonough (Dedham, Mass.) for the first goal of the contest. The Pride would out shoot Elms, 5-1, for the remainder of the half, with a shot from senior forward Jordan Lee (Hampden, Mass.) and three saves from first year goalkeeper Sofia Rivers (Hamilton, Ohio), but the Blazers would hold onto their 1-0 lead going into the halftime break.

Regis would continue their offensive pressure into the second half, recording an additional nine unanswered shots, including an equalizing goal in the 69th minute of play. During that span controlled by the Pride offense, Rivers would make six big saves for Elms. As the clock neared the end of the match, the Blazers would see shots from first year midfielder Claire Lewia (Meriden, Conn.), Basua, junior defender Sydney Polica (Stratford, Conn.), junior forward Kaylee Little (Boston, Mass.), and senior midfielder Daniella Niemiec (Chicopee, Mass.), but Regis would score the go-ahead goal in the 81st minute and would secure the conference victory, 2-1, over Elms.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • McDonough would score a goal.

  • Rivers would make ten saves of the 12 shots she would face.

  • Basua would add an assist and two shots.

  • Lee, Lewia, Little, Niemiec, and Polica would each add a shot.
