Score: Elms College 51 | Wellesley College 68
Records: Blazers 2-8, 0-0 (GNAC) | Blue 4-4, 0-0 (NEWMCAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The non-conference matchup would begin by the two teams trading possession early, but Elms would be the first to score when senior guard Kelly LeBel (Tolland, Conn.) would make a three-point shot after receiving a pass from first year guard Sanaii Diaz (Worcester, Mass.). Wellesley would score three baskets before sophomore forward/center Mary Turco (Winthrop, Mass.) would make two layups and a jump shot, that would be assisted by junior forward Tatiana Pereira (Providence, R.I.), LeBel, and senior forward/center Talia Uribe (South Hadley, Mass.), to take a 9-6 lead. After calling a timeout, the Blue offense began to take over and would score 12 points to end the opening quarter with a nine-point lead, 18-9. Both teams would start the second quarter with trips to the free throw line, with Diaz making both shots and would make a steal. Wellesley would continue to add to their lead, but the Blazers would continue to their efforts to trim the deficit, with Turco adding a layup, sophomore guard Gabby Wasiewicz (Worcester, Mass.) making three three-point shots and a steal, a layup and two steals from LeBel, and a steal from graduate student guard Angelina Cellucci (Sicklerville, N.J.). Unfortunately, the Blue would hold on to the lead going into the halftime break, 34-24.
The third quarter would start with the two intrastate foes trading possession early, with Pereira making a pair of free throws, Turco making a layup, and LeBel adding a steal. As Wellesley added to their lead, Elms looked to create some momentum on both ends of the court, with Turco recording a block and a tip-in, Uribe converted one of two free throws, recorded a steal, drew a second foul, and made both attempts the second time. After securing a defensive rebound, first year forward Devynn Watford (Billerica, Mass.) stepped out and hit a three-point shot to finish the quarter's scoring, but the Blue would maintain their 51-36 at the end of the quarter. Elms opened the final quarter with a block from Turco, a steal by senior guard Piper Graham (Lancaster, Penn.), a three-pointer from LeBel. Diaz knocked down a jumper, and Turco added a tip-in followed by another layup. LeBel and Wasiewicz would make a combined three steals, Diaz drilled a three-point shot, and Cellucci would make a three-point shot after receiving a pass from junior center Teah McKoy (Hartford, Conn.). Unfortunately, Wellesley would walk away with the 68-51 victory.
