Mens Soccer Plays To Double Overtime Tie With Mitchell, 0-0
CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College outshot Mitchell
College 5-2 in two periods of extra time, but neither team could
net the golden goal as the Blazers and Mariners played to a 0-0
double overtime tie in Wednesday evening's New England Collegiate
Conference (NECC) men's soccer game at Leary Field.
With the tie, Elms moves to 0-9-2 on the season, 0-2-1 in league action, while Mitchell moves to 4-4-1 on the season, 1-0-1 in NECC play.
With the score set at 0-0 heading into the first 10 minute overtime period, Elms' senior forward Chris Silva (Chicopee, Mass.) blasted a shot that Mitchell goalie Kevin Woodford (Niantic, Conn.) made a sliding save on to keep the score knotted at zero at the 98:00 minute mark. Silva had a second opportunity with 28 ticks remaining in the stanza but his header attempt went over the crossbar setting up a second overtime frame.
Silva, junior forward Sean Moylan (Chicopee, Mass.) and freshman midfielder Bryan Davey (Palmer, Mass.) each fired shots on net but Woodford was solid between the pipes, holding Elms scoreless and preserving the tie.
Woodford finished with 12 saves in the game, while Blazers' junior goalkeeper Jonathan Coyne (East Longmeadow, Mass.) provided a stellar performance, collecting six saves in the contest .
Elms outshot Mitchell 25-14 in the game with 20 of those shots coming in regulation (13 in the second half).
Silva finished with four shots on target, while Davey and senior defender Sam Senecal (Chicopee, Mass.) added two shots each.
Dustin Huguenin (Gales Ferry, Conn.), Will Frohnhoefer (Syosset, N.Y.) and John Burkart (Cresskill, N.J.) each tallied two shots for the Mariners.
Elms returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 9 when it travels to Bennington, Vt. to square off against NECC rival Southern Vermont College. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
