Pine Manor Outlasts Women's Lacrosse, 11-10
CHICOPEE, Mass. - Elms College sophomore
Katlyn Harrington (East Longmeadow Mass.) led the
Blazers with six goals but Pine Minor College received two goals in
the final 4:30 to help lift the Gators to a thrilling 11-10 victory
in Wednesday evening's non-conference women's lacrosse
game at Leary Field.
With the loss the Elms falls to 0-10 overall, while Pine Manor improves to 2-7 on the season.
The sides fought to an 8-8 tie with 5:21 remaining in the second period before Harrington netted her fifth goal of the game to give Elms a 9-8 edge. However the tide was turned quickly when Pine Manor's Myrell Redmond ( Baltimore, Md.) scored a goal at the 4:56 mark and then converted a free position attempt just 26 seconds later to give the Gators a 10-9 lead.
Pine Manor's Beth Deegan (Philadelphia Pa.) put the Gators up two goals when she connected on a free position shot, setting the score to 11-9 with 3:21 to play in the contest.
Elms mounted a rally when Harrington found the back of the net with 37 seconds to go in the game, pulling the Blazers to within one at 11-10. From there, Pine Manor fended off Elms' final attempt to even the score to hold on for a one-point victory.
Elms' senior goalkeeper Krystyna Gagne (Methuen, Mass.) was stellar between the pipes collecting 13 saves in the losing effort.
Pine Manor jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before junior midfielder Jennifer Lough (Feeding Hills, Mass.) notched back-to-back goals to even the contest at 2-2 with 24:53 to play in the opening period.
Redmond and Deegan extended the Gators' advantage back to two goals, before Harrington tallied her first goal of the game to pull Elms to within one at 4-3 with 3:09 to play in the first 30 minutes.
Redmond notched her second score of the half with just over a minute to play to give Pine Manor a 5-3 lead at intermission.
Blazers' sophomore attacker Kim Jodoin (Pittsfield, Mass.) scored just 22 ticks into the second frame before Pine Manor responded with three unanswered goals to post an 8-4 lead.
Elms answered with four consecutive goals of their own, including three from Harrington, to knot the contest 8-8.
Sophomore attacker Chelsey Grabowski (South Hadley, Mass.) assisted on two Harrington goals, while senior midfielder Melissa Pava (Springfield, Mass.) assisted on another.
Redmond finished with six goals in the winning effort for the Gators, while Deegan scored three goals, added seven draw controls and scooped seven groundballs.
Elms returns to New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) action on Saturday, April 17 when it hosts Bridgewater State College. First-draw is set for 11:30 a.m. at Leary Field. Saturday also marks the program's “Alumni Day” with festivities set for 10:00 a.m.
