Women's Swimming Falls at Smith

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Elms College women's swimming squad fell to host Smith College, 142-98, in a dual meet at Dalton Pool Tuesday night.

The Blazers won four of 15 events during the meet. Sophomore Ashlee Connors (Springfield, Mass.) won the 200 yard individual medley in a time of 2:49.17, while claiming second in the 100 yard backstroke (1:10.22) and the 200 yard backstroke (2:34.81). Junior Kelly O'Connell (Monson, Mass.) placed first in the 500 yard freestyle (6:38.13) and took fifth in the 200 yard freestyle (2:21.55), while senior Kim Panetta (Belchertown, Mass.) won the 50 yard butterfly at 32.12 and came in second in the 50 yard freestyle (28.75). Freshman Kayla Gurney (Wilbraham, Mass.) finished second in the 200 yard freestyle (2:21.55) and third in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:52.77). Sophomore Rachael Coleman (West Hartford, Conn.) placed second in the 50 yard fly (41.15), third in the 100 yard freestyle (1:09.59), and sixth in the 200 yard freestyle, while junior Rebecca Carterud (South Windsor, Conn.) grabbed second in the 500 yard freestyle (6:59.55), and fourth in the 100 yard backstroke (1:23.42). Senior Crystal Archibald (Portland, Maine) raced to second in the 200 individual medley (3:05.24), fourth in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:26.41), and fifth in the 200 yard breaststroke (3:06.11). Freshman Desi Milar (Springfield, Mass.) notched a pair of third-place finishes in the 50 yard free (29.22) and the 100 yard breaststroke (1:23.46); freshman Amanda Rotberg (Rowley, Mass.) was third in the 50 yard butterfly and fifth in the 100 yard freestyle (1:20.56) and the 100 yard backstroke (1:25.80); and freshman Jacqueline Given (Arlington, Mass.) came in third in the 500 freestyle (7:09.10) and sixth in the 50 yard free (32.60).

The team of Gurney, Panetta, Coleman, and Milar won the 200 yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:57.34, while the team of Given, Carterud, Rotberg, and O'Connell took second at 2:16.81. In the 200 yard medley relay, the team of Connors, Gurney, Panetta, and Milar claimed second (2:06.87), while the team of Carterud, Archibald, O'Connell, and Given finished fifth at 2:29.07.

The Blazers will be back in the pool with a road trip to UMass-Dartmouth for a meet at the Tripp Athletic Center Natatorium Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Smith hosts Westfield State Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
