Women's Swimming Fifth at GNAC Championships

BOSTON, Mass. - The Elms College women's swimming team finished fifth overall at the 2014 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships, hosted by Simmons College over the weekend.
Freshman Ashlee Connors (Springfield, Mass.) placed fourth in the 50 yard backstroke with a time of 31.38, as well as fifth in the 100 meter backstroke (1:10.27) and fifth in the 200 meter backstroke (2:31.63). Sophomore Abigail Will (Hopkington, Mass.) claimed fourth in the 100 meter butterfly (1:11.80) and eighth in the 50 meter butterfly (32.77), while sophomore Kelly O'Connell (Monson, Mass.) finished eighth in the 1650 meter freestyle (23:13.29). In the 200 meter medley, the relay team of Connors, Will, junior Crystal Archibald (Portland, Maine), and senior Erika Aponte (Palmer, Mass.) placed fourth with a time of 2:08.10, while the 400 meter medley team of Connors, Archibald, Will and sophomore Sarah Swart (Willington, Conn.) took fourth (4:55.44). The 800 meter freestyle team of Aponte, Swart, junior Kim Panetta (Belchertown, Mass.), and freshman Aislinn Carrier (Charlestown, Mass.) finished fourth in a time of 9:27.65.
The Blazers earned 50 team points during the championships. Simmons College won the event with 408 points, followed by Regis in second with 181.5 points, and Saint Joseph's (ME) with 105 points. Husson was fourth with 51.5 points, trailed by Elms, Saint Joseph's (CT) with 46 points, and Norwich with 30 points.
Elms will return to the pool in a road meet at Bridgeater State on January 7th at 4:00 p.m.
