Women's Lacrosse Preview: Mitchell

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College women's lacrosse team opens their 2015 New England Collegiate Conference schedule with a home match against Mitchell College Tuesday afternoon at Leary Field. Face-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

The Blazers enter the showdown with a 2-4 overall record, picking up wins over Sage (12-7) and Albertus Magnus (9-3) before falling to Fitchburg State their last time out. Offensively, Elms is producing six goals per game on 19.8 shots. The Blazers attack is helmed by the duo of junior attacker Jillian Pirog (Ludlow, Mass.) and senior midfielder Kayla Narey (South Hadley, Mass.). Pirog is Elms' leading point-scorer with 11 on ten goals and an assists, while Narey has tallied 10 goals with a team-high 16 ground balls and a team-high 11 caused turnovers. Senior attacker Nora McDonough (South Hadley, Mass.) has dished out a team-high five assists with three goals, while junior attacker Ashley Cava (Wilbraham, Mass.) has added five goals. Freshman midfielder Jackie Soucia (Belchertown, Mass.) has grabbed a team-high 13 draw controls with a goal, freshman midfielder Victoria-Lynn Smith (Somers, Conn.) has 11 ground balls with a pair of goals, and freshman midfielder Madison Jung (Stafford Springs, Conn.) added a pair of goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Meeghan O'Connor (Fall River, Mass.) has stopped a league-high 63 shots in net with a 44.1 save percentage.

The Mitchell Mariners will open their 2015 NECC slate with a 0-3 mark on the season after dropping matches to MCLA (14-6), Green Mountain (16-5), and Framingham State (19-4). The Mariners are averaging five goals on nine shots through three contests. Mitchell is paced by sophomore midfielder Ashley Murtha (South Windsor, Conn.) with a team-high 10 points on a team-high nine goals with an assist. Freshman attacker Tiana Fillmore (Norwich, Conn.) has added three goals on six shots, while sophomore attacker Amanda Rowan (Sandy Hook, Conn.) has three points with two goals and an assist. Junior attacker Veyda McVey (Wallingford, Conn.) has chipped in a goal and an assist. Mitchell sophomore goalie Taylor Dansereau (Griswold, Conn.) owns a 17.44 goals against average with 37 saves and a 43.0 save percentage.

Last season, the Blazers defeated the Mariners, 27-8, in their first ever meeting at Leary Field.
