Women’s Lacrosse Falls at Becker College, 19-10
LEICESTER, Mass. – Elms College received three goals each from junior attacker Kaitlyn Harrington (East Longmeadow, Mass.), sophomore midfielder Kayla Narey (South Hadley, Mass.) and senior attacker Emily Walsh (Hadley, Mass.), but Becker College used a 12-goal second half and Ashley Mossey (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) scored nine goals including her 100th-career tally to help pace the Hawks to a 19-10 victory over the Blazers in Saturday's New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) game in Leicester, Mass.
With the loss, Elms falls to 0-11 on the season, 0-5 in conference action, while Becker improves to 3-9 overall, 2-2 in NEWLA play.
Elms took an early 3-1 lead in the opening 10 minutes as Narey struck just 19 seconds into the game and then again with 22:13 to play in the period, while Walsh added her first goal of the game four minutes in.
Becker took the lead on three consecutive goals, highlighted by two from Mossey to post a 4-3 lead with 13:50 to play in the half. Walsh and Narey then scored back-to-back markers to recapture the lead at 5-4, but the Hawks outscored the Blazers 3-1 over the final 5:41 of the first frame to stake a 7-6 lead after 30 minutes of play.
After a goal by Becker's Morgan Hazen (Woodstock, Vt.) put the Hawks ahead 8-6, Harrington and sophomore midfielder Brianna Lyons (Canton, Mass.) each found the back of the net to tie the game at 8-8 with 24:09 to play in regulation.
Becker then broke the game open stringing together 10 straight goals to post a commanding 18-8 advantage.
Harrington added her second and third goals of the game as Becker held on for a 19-10 victory.
Hazen finished with three goals, while Shannon Smith (Barre, Vt.) and Samantha Jo-Dilkes (Little Falls, N.J.) added two each for the Hawks. Chaqueline Chila (Monroe, Conn.) and Christina Boucher (Pawcatuck, Conn.) added six groundballs each, while goalkeeper Karena Prescott (New Bedford, Mass.) earned the win with 11 saves.
Elms' senior net-minder Rachel Schrutt (Chicopee, Mass.) turned away 21 shots and suffered the loss, while Lyons picked up a team-best four groundballs.
Elms returns to NEWLA action on Tuesday, April 17 at Framingham State University at 4:30 p.m.
