Softball Competes for Third Day in Florida

NAPLES, Fla. - The Elms College Softball team played against Rockford University as a part of the 36th Annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the North Collier Regional Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Sophomore pitcher Reece Hebert (North Haven, Conn.) would take the ball in game for Elms. In the top of the first inning, Hebert would record a swinging strikeout for the first out, followed by an infield fly to first year infielder Ashlyn Cullity (Wilmington, Mass.) would relay a throw to first year catcher/utility player Lizzie Jamrog (Suffield, Conn.) to end the inning. Unfortunately, Rockford would score two runs during the inning to take an early lead. In the top of the second, Hebert would make back-to-back swinging strikeouts that would help give the Regents their first scoreless inning of the day. In the bottom half of the inning, Hebert would earn a walk and would advance to second base on a passed ball, but the Blazers would not be able to score. In the top of the third inning, Hebert would strikeout the lead off batter, but Rockford would add a run during the inning. In the bottom of the third inning, sophomore outfielder Tyanez Padilla (Springfield, Mass.) would earn a walk and first year outfielder Aniah Glover (West Haven, Conn.) would reach base on an error committed by the third baseman, but Elms would be held to a scoreless inning. In the top half of the fourth inning, the Regents would add four more runs to their lead and junior pitcher/outfielder Kaelyn Zakaitis (Amherst, Mass.) would come in to relieve Hebert. In the bottom of the fourth, junior pitcher/utility player Caity Flynn (Colchester, Conn.) would hit a lead-off single to left field and first year catcher/utility player Jordyn Rossi (West Springfield, Mass.) would earn a walk. In the top of the fifth inning, Zakkaitis would strike out the lead-off batter looking, and make another batter go down swinging. Unfortunately, Rockford would score nine more runs in the inning to take a 16-0 lead and would go on to win the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Hebert: a walk at the plate, and would pitch three and ⅔ innings with four strikeouts.

  • Zakaitis: would pitch one and ⅓ innings, with two strikeouts.

  • Flynn: a single.

  • Glover: a walk.

  • Rossi: a walk.

  • Padilla: a walk.

UP NEXT: The Elms Softball team will host Anna Maria College in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, March 19th at 2 & 4 pm for their home opener at Cheryl R. Condon Field.
