Men’s Soccer Outlasts Mount
Ida, 2-1
CHICOPEE, MA – Elms College sophomore
Adam Schnopp (Pittsfield, MA) netted the
game’s first goal in the opening minutes as the Blazers
outlasted the Mount Ida Mustangs 2-1 on a blustery Wednesday
afternoon at Leary Field.
With the victory Elms snaps a four-game losing streak to improve
to 3-8 overall, while Mount Ida falls to 3-7 on the season.
Elms broke out to an early lead when Schnopp controlled a loose
ball off a save in front of the net and capitalized with his second
goal of the season to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead seven minutes
into the contest.
Blazers’ junior Justin Pearson (Torrington,
CT) added the team’s second goal towards the end of
the first half on a breakaway down the right side from his typical
defensive position. The score extended the Blazers' lead to 2-0
heading into halftime.
Senior goalkeeper Nick Pellegrini (Ludlow, MA)
was stellar between the pipes compiling eight saves to stifle the
Mount Ida shooting onslaught - the Mustangs outshot Elms 33-17 on
the day.
Pearson was in the right place at the right time when he cleared
a potential goal out of the zone, preserving the shutout.
The Mustangs finally struck in the 87th minute when Billy Beauzile (Brooklyn, NY) found Hayato Kanesaka (Old Tappan, NJ) who placed the ball in the top left corner to cut the lead 2-1.
From there, the Blazers were able to fend off Mount Ida and
secure the squad's third victory of the season.
Splitting the net-minding duties for the Mustangs were
Steven Enright (South Kingston, RI) and
Andrew Clark (Greenville, NY) who combined for
nine saves.
Schnopp and junior midfielder Sam Senecal (Chicopee,
MA) finished with three shots apiece, while four other
Blazers finished with two shots in the winning effort.
Elms returns to New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action on
Saturday, Oct. 10 at Mitchell. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
