Baseball Lose in Another Nail-Biter to Saint Joseph's-Maine

STANDISH, Maine - The Elms College Baseball team traveled to Saint Joseph's College of Maine for a conference game on Thursday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Elms would record the first runners on base, following a walk by senior outfielder Camron Watkins (East Haddam, Conn.) and a single by senior outfielder George Chaya Jr. (Methuon, Mass.), but St. Joseph's would be the first on the scoreboard, scoring the opening run in the bottom of the first inning. First year pitcher/infielder Brycen Diaz (Andrews, Texas) would get out of the early jam, recording a strikeout to end the inning. Then in the top of the second inning, sophomore pitcher/utility player Andrew Ciaglo (Hadley, Mass,) would start the inning with a single through the left side of the field. Later in the inning, Watkins would drive-in Ciaglo, senior infielder Felix Gutierrez (Holyoke, Mass.), and junior pitcher/outfielder Nason Busca (Windsor, Conn.) for a three-run triple to left field to give the Blazers a 3-1 lead. The Monks would add a run in the bottom of the third inning, but Elms would continue to add to their lead after senior catcher Blake Bastos (Mineola, N.Y.) would cross the plate prior to SJC recording a triple-play in the top of the fourth. After the bottom of the sixth inning, Diaz would be relieved by junior pitcher Colby Arnold (Waterford, Conn.) after throwing a total of six strikeouts. In the seventh inning, the Monks would get two runners on base, but a line drive would be with to graduate student infielder AJ Cook (Mendon, Mass.) and would make the double play at second base to end the inning. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the St. Joseph's offense would unleash itself, scoring four runs to take the lead. The Elms offense would try to answer back in the top of the ninth, but the Monks would hold off the Blazers to take the conference matchup 6-4.

  • Busca: 0 for three, with a run scored and a walk.

  • Chaya Jr.: one for three, with a walk.

  • Cook: one for five, and would be involved in a double play defensively.

  • Diaz: would pitch six innings, with six strikeouts and four scoreless innings.
  • Gutierrez: one for three, with a run scored and a walk and would be involved in a double play defensively.

  • Watkins: one for three, with a triple, three runs batted-in and a walk.

UP NEXT: The Elms Baseball team will host Lasell University in a conference game on Sunday, April 13th at 1 pm for their Respect Game at Mackenzie Stadium.
