Baseball Sweeps NECC Weekly Awards
ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Elms College swept the weekly
New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) player of the week awards
for baseball as announced by the league office on Monday.
Senior infielder Mike Andrews (Greenfield, Mass.)
was named NECC Player of the Week, while freshman center fielder
Stephen Fisher (West Boylston, Mass.) garnered
conference rookie of the week honors. Junior right-hander
Matt Wood (Feeding Hills, Mass.) was also selected
as this week’s NECC Pitcher of the Week.
Andrews had a stellar opening week for the Blazers, hitting safely
in all seven contests including three multiple hit games. In an
extra inning 13-12 win over Olivet, Andrews went 3 for 4 with two
RBI and a round-tripper. He batted .458 (11-for-24) with nine RBI,
five runs and two doubles during the nine-game stretch.
Fisher began his debut season by batting .406 (13-for-32) with
four doubles, one triple, four RBI and 15 runs scored during the
Gene Cusic Classic. Fisher also drew 12 walks including four
in a 7-4 victory over Coast Guard. He provided a spark on the bases
going five-for-five in stolen bases, helping Elms to a 4-5
week.
Wood picked up two wins in 12 innings of work including a 7-4
victory over Coast Guard and a 16-2 win in game one of a
doubleheader against Finlandia. Wood set a program single-game
record for strikeouts, fanning 11 batters against Finlandia to
highlight a complete-game seven-inning outing. He finished the week
with a 2.25 ERA and 17 punch-outs.
