Wilfrido Fermin

Wilfrido Fermin – Elms College sophomore men’s volleyball player Wilfrido Fermin (Bronx, N.Y.) was selected as this month’s male student athlete spotlight.

A sociology major, Fermin cannot live without his music and even loves to compose it!

Fermin chose to attend Elms College because it is a small school that allows teachers to focus and pay more attention to their students, it has a great sports program, and being away from home is a brand new experience for him.

The biggest influence in Fermin’s life is his family – “My mother has always taught me how to strive to be a better person and that with hard work anything can be achieved. My sister practically had to raise me because my mother worked an extreme amount of hours. Still to this day, my sister plays a major role in all the decisions I make. Last but not least, my Elms College brothers, also known as my best friends - they always make sure I do the right thing, they lead by example and overall they just make me a better person.”

In his first year playing collegiate volleyball, Fermin downed 91 kills, collected 49 digs, and was third on the team in blocks with 46 that included a team-best 37 assisted blocks. On February 6, 2010, Fermin smashed nine kills in a 3-0 win over Southern Vermont College, helping pace the Blazers to a season sweep of the Mountaineers. Fermin collected 53 of his 91 kills during conference action. He also picked up five of his 37 assisted blocks in a 3-1 win over Lesley University on February 13, helping the Blazers to a 3-5 record in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action.
