Student Athletes Honored at Athletics Awards Banquet
At the end of each year the Elms College
athletics department recognizes its student athletes and their
achievements from that season.
Athletics Department Award Winners
The Monsignor Timothy J. Leary
Award is presented for demonstrating Monsignor
Leary’s spirit, dedication, leadership and love of
athletics.
-The 2013 winners are Mark Gehring (West
Springfield, Mass.), of the men's swim team
and Leah Spring (South Hadley, Mass.), a
member of the women’s soccer and softball teams.
The Dr. Joachim Froehlich Award is a
well rounded student athlete that achieves academic success as well
as athletic, has a full understanding of the college’s
mission and is an inspiration to their teammates and coaches.
-The 2013 winners are Stephen Fisher (West Boylston,
Mass.) of the baseball team and Alexandra
Bonavita (Agawam, Mass.) of the field hockey and softball
programs.
The Senior Athlete of the Year
Award recognizes the department’s most
outstanding athlete in terms of athletic ability and
accomplishment. All senior student athletes who are in good
playing and academic standing are eligible for this award.
-The 2013 male Senior Athlete of the Year is men's baskeball
player Andre French (Torrington,
Conn.) and Tessa
Dudunake (Northampton,
Mass.) of the women’s swim team.
The Elms College athletics trainers also give out the Sports Medicine Awards to a male and a female student athlete. Their award is famously known as the Band-Aid Award and this year’s recipient is Jen Normandie (Westford, Mass.) of the women's basketball team.
The Bolt Awards were created by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in 2005-06 as a way for Elms College student athletes to recognize the accomplishment of their peers at the College's annual year-end athletics banquet.
